Linguistic Analysis of Print Media Discourse
Lingvistička analiza diskursa pisanih medija
Keywords:
discourse analysis, macrostructure, critical discourse analysis, media discourse, news storyAbstract
The purpose of this paper is to present linguistic instruments used in the analysis of print media discourse. The paper puts discourse at the centre of the hierarchy of linguistic units, starting from the claim that discourse is not just language above sentence level - which is now a rather traditional view - but an approach that includes all language levels.
In the second part, the paper offers basic characteristics of discourse. The third part contains a short review of two theories used in the analysis: van Dijk’s theory of the schematic structure of news stories (macrostructure and microstructures) and Fairclough’s approach to critical discourse analysis. The combination of these two approaches can provide clear guidelines for an objective analysis of news texts. The fourth part of the paper provides specific examples that illustrate the theoretical claims presented.
